In the Christopher Biggins production of The Taming of the Shrew for the Holders Shakespeare Festival, Drew “nearly stole the show with a Bajan accent which brought the text vividly to life” while performing as Gremio.

In the United Kingdon, Drew has worked for small theatre companies playing a variety of roles including Herod in Salome and both Fagin and Mister Bumble in Oliver! The Ingoldsby Legends

The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of Victorian stories and poems written by the Reverend Richard H Barham, in the persona of Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor.

Barham was a contemporary of Charles Dickens, and his tales were first published in 1837 in Bentley’s Miscellany when Dickens was editor.

In equal parts funny, gruesome, moral and haunting, these tales are the perfect antidote to the winter cold. Pull a chair up to the fireside, pour a glass of port and prepare to be entertained.

You can read the legends here.

Welcome to Warden Pie – the story of a play.

Thanks for taking a look at my blog. This is my first attempt to produce a play from scratch, an I’d love it if you’d join me over the next six weeks as it all starts to take shape. So far I have…

  • an associate producer
  • a fabulous cast
  • three dates   – 27th, 28th and 29th January
  • some fabulous designs for sets and costumes
  • a great yarn to spin, a story to weave and a spell to cast

I’d love it if you could join me on this journey and I’d love it even more if you would come and see the play.

Penny xx

Thanks OWG!

Just time to thank OWG Centre and particularly Richard Gregg for our production design. As ever, thoughtful, adventurous and on a shoestring budget.

The centre runs the fantastic Stretch Youth Theatre, which has given many children the opportunity to be part of a group and to perform infront of an audience. Their aim is not to get youngsters into showbiz careers (although some have gone on to study theatre arts subjects) but to encourage teamwork, creativity confidence and excellence, whatever they do in later life.

Views of set designs, posters and costume designs to follow. Watch this space!

Would you like to support this production?

If you are someone who loves the Arts and would like to be more involved, here’s a fantastic opportunity – and you don’t need to be Cameron Mackintosh! There are many ways you can support this production.

  • Firstly, by coming to see it on 27th,  28th or 29th January. We have tried to make sure there will be a performance in your area, if you are in London or North Kent. Without an audience, there would be no play and you would make such a lovely audience member!
  • Secondly, by sponsoring. If you felt you could donate some money towards our production costs, that would be fantastic! We would love you forever and give you a special mention in our programme. Even small amounts would be warmly welcomed, but we wouldn’t turn down large amounts!
  • If you run a business and could donate money, materials, services, or items we could use for the production or for a fundraising raffle, again you would get a special mention in our programmes and on our publicity materials, as well as our undying gratitude.

Thank you for your support!

Dark Entry

What is Warden Pie?

 the Rev.

WARDEN PIE

A haunting tale to warm the cockles on a cold winter night.

One-Act Play by Penny Culliford based on Dark Entry, The Legend of Nell Cook from the Ingoldsby Legends by Rev Richard H Barham

In a dark passage near the cloisters of Canterbury Cathedral, a secret lies buried for a hundred years. Three stonemasons arrive to work on a loose paving stone and the secret is released. A place where evil masquerades as good, and the good are driven to evil deeds but everyone gets their just “desserts”.

‘For soups, and stews, and choice ragouts, Nell Cook was famous still!
She’d make them even of old shoes, she had such wond’rous skill:
Her manchets fine were quite divine, her cakes were nicely brown’d,
Her boil’d and roast, they were the boast of all the ‘Precinct’ round;

From The Ingoldsby Legends, by the Rev. Richard H. Barham

Warden Pie

A blog about producing the play “Warden Pie”.

Hello world!

This is my new blog where I hope to chart the journey of producing my first play. It’s exciting and daunting at the same time. At the moment, I have a script, a possible director and several phone numbers for venues. I have a sheet of A4 lined paper with a draft budget, some dates for late January in my diary and lots and lots of friends who I hope will follow the journey and give advice, suggestions, support, (even money if they have any spare and would like to invest!) and most important of all, come and see the play!

I hope to update this blog regularly. At the moment, it all seems very scary and a huge daunting task, but I am ready to eat the elephant (even though I’m vegetarian) one bite at a time.

Thanks so much for joining me and following the progress of this play.
